2:22 A Ghost Story - Review

If you haven’t heard of 2:22 A Ghost Story, then where have you been? There has been so much buzz around this play, partially due to its constantly changing cast, including Lily Allen and Sophia Bush. Now it arrives at the Alexandra Theatre Birmingham.

This is a spoiler-free review, so there are many things that I can't and will not share, because I believe that it is more enjoyable to experience them first-hand.

Written by Danny Robins, creator of the hit BBC podcasts Uncanny and The Battersea Poltergeist. This supernatural thriller stars Jay McGuiness (The Wanted, BIG! The Musical, Rip It Up), Fiona Wade (Emmerdale, Silent Witness), George Rainsford (Call the Midwife, Casualty) and Vera Chok (Hollyoaks, Cobra).

Directed by Matthew Dunster and Isabel Marr they embrace the contemporary notes of this play and bring this play to the stage with a sense of realism. Anna Fleischle’s stunning set design brings detail and scale to the living room/kitchen, making the audience feel they are watching through a window into someone’s actual house. Lucy Carter’s lighting design complements the set design by bringing the suited lighting for the interior and the atmospheric design for the property's exterior. The production scale continues in Cindy Lin’s stylish costume design, which shows that the play is set now, utilising current fashion trends.

In 2:22 our four characters, Sam, Jenny, Ben, and Lauren, sit down to dinner and discuss the strange phenomenon occurring in Sam and Jenny’s newly bought fixer-upper, which Jenny believes is haunted. Things become heated as sceptics and believers argue their cases to each other before deciding to see for themselves by staying up until 2:22 am, the time the haunting begins…

This had me on the edge of my seat throughout. Whilst it’s chilling and tense there are so many humorous moments that had the audience in fits of laughter. The cast is stellar, and their acting is supreme. Fiona Wade, George Rainsford, Vera Chok and Jay McGuiness have fabulous chemistry. I particularly enjoyed Jay’s comedic performance; he embodied his character.

So, what do you believe? And do you dare discover the truth? 2:22 – A Ghost Story is a chilling production, exploring the paranormal in a jaw-dropping way. You do not want to miss this production.

2:22 is on At the Alexander Theatre Birmingham until Saturday, 20th of January 2024. Tickets are available at the following link https://www.atgtickets.com/shows/2-22-a-ghost-story/the-alexandra-theatre-birmingham/.
