Derren Brown - Showman.

An in-conquerable host.

This review is a little tricky to write, not due to lack of content or interest, but simply because Derren asks that the show's content is kept secret so as not to spoil anything for future audiences. However, there is still plenty that I can share with you about this spellbinding show.

As alluded to in the subtitle, Derren is the ultimate host, and he leads the show with exquisite charisma. He has the audience in the palm of his hand and keeps them captivated with every word he speaks. His stage presence is effortless and commands your attention. Having never been to one of his shows before, I had no idea what to expect, so I went in with a very open mind and I was pleasantly surprised, but I also found myself questioning my mind.

Born in Croydon in 1971, Derren states that his interest in magic and psychological techniques goes back to childhood. Eventually, after years of hard work, his big break came in 1999, and since then he has redefined magic through the years. He has gone from strength to strength on both the stage and on television.

Showman begins the moment that you walk into the theatre, instantly you have no idea what is going to happen next, which is the theme of the entire show. Ordinary members of the public take to the stage to help Derren’s acts, but each time they have no idea what they are about to become involved in. This is quite impressive as the audience knows that he does this every night with different people, yet he still manages to remain so calm and in control.

The show brings about a plethora of emotions to the audience, which could be heard clearly as there was laughter, gasps, and tears. The show seems to connect the audience and bring strangers together in conversation. Derren himself suggests that the show explores the themes of those tough times in lockdown and how they can feel isolating, but they have brought us closer together. The resultant effect is that the heart of the show focuses on what is actually important.

By the time it is the end, it's impossible not to feel feelings of joy and sorrow as you are left feeling unsure of what just occurred. Derren has this ability to leave you questioning your memory, and reality, and contemplate what matters most in your life.

If you already have tickets to the show, then I would suggest that you keep an eye on Derren’s social media as he may ask you to bring something to the show.

Derren Brown Showman continues at the Alexandra Theatre until Saturday the 11th of September. Tickets can be found at the following link https://www.atgtickets.com/shows/derren-brown-showman/the-alexandra-theatre-birmingham/
