Greatest Days - Review

Go on and relight your fire with this fantastic new production of Take That’s smash hit musical Greatest Days, currently on at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre.

Previously titled The Band featuring a cast who won the BBC TV show Let It Shine, the show broke box office records and delighted audiences around the United Kingdom when it performed from 2017 – 2019. I saw this run of the show and knew it was something special, so it’s great to see it come back.

The musical follows five boy band-obsessed best friends in the 1990s, who reunite over 20 years later to see their heartthrobs one last time. The musical follows their journey from young teenagers through to adulthood. It’s a jukebox musical that takes you on a roller-coaster of emotions. There are feelings of joy, laughter, and elation but also heartbreak, tragedy, and regret.

There were a few cast changes this evening with the role of Rachel usually played by Kym Marsh played by Rachel Marwood. Emilie Cunliffe’s role of young Rachel was played by Evangeline Jarvis Jones. The role of Debbie usually played by Mary Moore was executed by Bayley Hart whose vocals were very strong. Benjamin Cameron performed in the boyband in place of Kalifa Burton. These cast changes are part of the nature of live theatre and show the cast's adaptability. The show was brilliant and highlighted the talent of the cast, dealing with last-minute changes so well. Dancing on Ice 2022 winner Regan Gascoigne also joins the cast of this musical as a member of the infamous boyband. The cast has been well chosen as there are two generations playing versions of their characters. And the 5 singers don’t attempt to impersonate the group but take on an interpretation of them, which feels more original. All the members of the boyband Jamie Corner, Archie Durrant, Regan Gascoigne, Benjamin Cameron and Alexanda O’Reilly had great chemistry as a group. They were all triple threats, but I was particularly impressed by the dance moves and slick choreography (courtesy of choreographer Aaron Renfree) they executed.

GREATEST DAYS features more than 15 record-breaking Take That songs such as Back For Good, Do What You Like and Shine, alongside a heart-warming and hilarious story of love, loss and laughter from award-winning writer Tim Firth. I loved the show and thought it was just pure joy!

The musical had a warm-hearted nostalgic tone to it. The audience was reminiscing special moments in their lives for which the songs of Take That have been important. This was a real celebration of their music and the way the power of music can do, how it can make you feel and the memories that come with that.

Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Take That’s first ever UK number 1 single Pray and coinciding with the summer 2023 release of the official movie of this smash hit musical featuring Aisling Bea and Jayde Adams– GREATEST DAYS is sure to be a night out at the theatre you will Never Forget.

So, grab your friends, Take That fans or family and head on down to the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre to go and have a brilliant night reliving all the hits.

Greatest Days continues at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre until Saturday 22nd July 2023. Tickets are available at the following link https://www.grandtheatre.co.uk/whats-on/greatest-days/
