Review: Carlos Acosta‘s Nutcracker in Havana

priyagupta1014

I have been a fan of Carlos Acosta for a very long time so I was super excited for this new work.

Prepare to be swept away to a sun-drenched, salsa-infused Christmas wonderland as Carlos Acosta’s Nutcracker in Havana bursts onto the stage at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre. This isn’t just the Nutcracker you know—this is the Nutcracker reimagined, pulsating with the rhythms and vibrant energy of Cuba, and it’s a dazzling triumph.

It’s a Cuban Carnival of Dance and Music. Acosta, a living legend in the world of classical ballet, has taken Tchaikovsky’s timeless score and infused it with a Cuban twist. The result is an exuberant re-orchestration that perfectly complements the fiery passion and flair of his 20-strong company, Acosta Danza.

The production seamlessly blends ballet’s elegance with the soulful, joyful traditions of Cuban dance, creating a spectacle that is both refreshing and irresistibly infectious. You’ll find yourself swaying in your seat as the dancers spin and leap through the streets of Havana, brought to life with vibrant sets and costumes that burst with color.

The Mastermind Behind the MagicCarlos Acosta’s influence is unmistakable. As a former Principal Guest Artist with the Royal Ballet and an internationally renowned choreographer, Acosta brings not only technical brilliance but also an emotional depth to this festive classic. Born in Havana, he’s uniquely positioned to transform the Nutcracker into a celebration of his homeland’s culture, and the result is electric. This production feels personal, a love letter to Cuba wrapped in sugar plum dreams and festive cheer.

A Story as Sweet as Sugarcane, the tale remains familiar: a young girl, a magical Nutcracker, and a journey through fantastical realms. But here, every detail is tinged with Havana’s warmth. The Cuban traditions—samba-inspired footwork, mambo beats, and a touch of carnival spirit—add fresh life to the narrative, making it feel as though it has always belonged in the heart of a tropical Christmas.

A Night of Sheer Joy, this is not just a production for dance aficionados—it’s for families, dreamers, and anyone in need of a little escapism. Whether you’re captivated by the intricate choreography, the swirling skirts, or the infectious Cuban rhythms, you’ll leave the theatre feeling lighter and brighter.

Catch It While You Can!Nutcracker in Havana runs at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre until Tuesday, January 16th, with tickets still available here. After that, the show continues its journey to Milton Keynes Theatre and The Lowry in Salford. Don’t miss your chance to witness this extraordinary fusion of classical ballet and Cuban soul—it’s the Christmas gift you didn’t know you needed.
