Last night I was in stitches, I hadn't laughed that much in ages. The reason for my laughter is at the Alexandra Theatre Birmingham, where Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em
is currently on the Birmingham leg of its tour.

The stage adaptation is based on the 1970s classic TV comedy by Ray Allen and directed by the award-winning Guy Unsworth. It was clear to see in the audience that they had managed to capture the essence of the TV show perfectly, and I could see the nostalgia in the press area as people spoke fondly of their memories of the TV show. As someone who had never seen the show, I enjoyed this production, the slapstick humour was excellently handled and didn't fall into the trap of becoming overly farcical.
Joe Pasquale, the nation’s favourite funny man took on the role of Frank Spencer, and he embodied the comedic character effortlessly. In the TV show, the character was played by Michael Crawford and he had the nation chorusing ‘Ooh, Betty!’. However, Joe Pasquale didn't attempt to be a copycat of this iconic character but took on his version of the role by putting in his isms and idiosyncratic gestures. Sarah Earnshaw did a wonderful role in playing Frank's wife, Betty Spencer and she managed to remain in perfect character despite all the comedic chaos on stage. The whole cast was terrific, as this show was full of comedic devices such as wordplay, innuendos, the set falling apart, and many props. As it was a very small cast, they all held their own on stage and commanded laughter from the audience instantly with every line. So, a mention must go to Susie Blake, Moray Treadwell, James Paterson, Ben Watson, and understudies Nick Wray and Alice Osmanski.
