Revision on Tour: Macbeth - Review

Dig out those English textbooks because Revision on Tour: Macbeth is on at The Alexandra Theatre Birmingham.

Dickens Theatre Company present the Bard’s bloodiest tragedy!

Alongside the infamous Porter acting as narrator, an ensemble of 7 actors creates a cauldron of characters, as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth make their perilous descent towards Hell.

Keeping with tradition it is set against a backdrop of wars, witchery and treasonous plotting, Shakespeare’s ambitious Macbeth remains ominously relevant in the 21st Century.

Set in mediaeval Scotland and partially based on a true historical account. The play charts the rise to power and the untimely, tragic downfall of the warrior Macbeth.

In Scotland, Macbeth receives prophecies from three witches, foretelling his rise to kingship. Encouraged by his wife, Lady Macbeth, he murders King Duncan to seize the throne. As paranoia consumes him, Macbeth orders the killing of Banquo and his family. Despite reassurances from the witches, Macbeth's reign leads to chaos and bloodshed. Ultimately, he is defeated by Malcolm and Macduff, ending his tyrannical rule.

As with any Shakespeare play, there is much meaning behind everything. What we learn from Macbeth is that You should control your ambition and not let your ambition control you. During a time when people were plotting to kill the king and fear of espionage was rife these were relevant and important messages. Because immediately after the murder, Macbeth becomes a man who is guilt-ridden and tragically remorseful, But even this can't help his paranoia.

This show is perfect for those studying Macbeth at English GCSE, it opens that world. I always think a dramatised exploration of a text can help students see the play in a new way and applycontext and a sense of realness.
