Steel Magnolias - Review

It's time for you to grab those gal pals and head on down to the Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham, where Steel Magnolias is about to light up the stage with what the true meaning of friendship is.

Steel Magnolias is based on the uplifting, inspiring film starring Julia Roberts and Dolly Parton. It was first performed off-Broadway in 1987. It follows the story of six women who are bound together in a small-town beauty salon in the American South. Faced with the highs and lows of life and love amongst the chaos of marriage, work, and children, they unite to gossip, rejoice and set the world to rights.

I remember the first time I saw the film. I was with my friend, her sister, and her mother. The second time I saw the film was with my mother. I believe that this is a story that transcends generations because, at the core, women from all walks of life come together and help each other through thick and thin.

The whole show was very simplistic in its style with it being set only in Truvy’s hair salon, which was very on-brand transporting you back to the 1980s. There were moments where it felt as if you were hearing more about the plot than seeing the plot unfold, however, the storytelling by the characters is very entertaining. My friend who came to see the show with me commented on the chemistry between the six women onstage. It was as if they'd known each other their whole lives, they’d built up a strong rapport.

This show was truly heart-warming. Throughout these couple of hours, I felt many emotions but the overriding one was the love that I have for the women in my life. The show reminded me of the power of female friendships and the importance of having them. As the six women (who were incredible) took their bow, I felt both empowered and proud to see them up on that stage, telling what is essentially an everyday story of what it means to be a woman; be that a mother, daughter, sister, auntie, or friend.

The show boasts a fabulous cast, including Laura Main (Call the Midwife), Harriet Thorpe (Absolutely Fabulous, The Brittas Empire), Lucy Speed (The Archers, The Bill) and Diana Vickers (The X-Factor, Dial M For Murder, The Rise and Fall of Little Voice) as they set up shop in this raucous classic, comedy masterpiece. In this performance, it was Claire Carpenter who played the role of Louise.

So, ring up those girlfriends of yours and go experience these touching moments that show what friendship and laughter are all about. You're guaranteed to have a brilliant night.

Steel Magnolias is on at the Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham until 25th March. Tickets are available at the following link https://www.atgtickets.com/shows/steel-magnolias/the-alexandra-theatre-birmingham/
