Next up at The Alexandra Theatre Birmingham is The Shawshank Redemption. One of the nation’s favourite movies becomes an acclaimed stage event.
Based upon the short novel by Stephen King, adapted by Owen O’Neill and Dave Johns, this production is directed by David Esbjornson. The 1994 feature film is often voted as Britain’s favourite film, starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, nominated for seven Academy Awards.

The story follows Andy Dufresne, who despite his constant protests of innocence is handed a double life sentence for the ruthless murder of his wife and her lover. Detained at the infamous Shawshank facility, he is quick to learn that nobody can survive alone. Dufresne strikes up an unlikely friendship with the prison fixer Red, and things take a slightly more positive turn. However, when Warden Stammas decides to bully Andy into subservience, exploiting his accounting talents, a desperate plan is rapidly concocted.
This production features a stellar cast with Joe Absolom taking on the role of Andy Dufresne. In a recent interview, Absolom described the story as one of friendship and hope, exploring the ups and downs of life. Absolom goes on to speak about his excitement at returning to the stage and being able to have this opportunity to play such a complex character. Ben Onwukwe playing Ellis ‘Red’ Redding, boasts an incredible 30-year stage career including lead roles with the RSC, most recently appearing in the drama series Professor T. At this evening’s production the role of Bogs was played by Lee James and Rooster was played by Farmarge Hamilton.
