From her early days at Urdang Academy to her first leading role as Princess Louise in Sleeping Beauty at Buxton Opera House, Ruby Hewitt is a rising star of the stage. This Christmas, she’s bringing her talent and festive cheer to pantomime lovers. I caught up with Ruby to talk about her journey in theatre, the magic of panto, and what Christmas at home looks like for her.
You’re performing in Buxton this year—how are you finding working in a new place during the festive season?
“I find working in a new place really exciting. At first, it takes a bit of getting used to, but once rehearsals are underway and you get to know the people you’re working with, it’s great fun! Buxton is a lovely place and feels very festive, so that’s great too!”
Since graduating from Urdang, how has the journey been transitioning into professional theatre?
“There have been a lot of ups and downs for me. I’ve done hundreds of auditions and had so many no’s, but the yes’s make it all worthwhile! It’s really important to have a life outside of theatre so that you don’t rely so heavily on it.”
I loved watching you in Cinderella last year! What is it about pantomime that you enjoy the most?
“Thank you so much! I love panto because everyone is there to have a good time! The themes of the show are light and comical, and that’s often reflected backstage too. I also love that it’s many people’s first introduction to theatre, so I feel a responsibility to make sure they love it!”
What does Christmas look like for you at home in Birmingham this year?
“I’ll be coming home on Christmas Eve after a two-show day and returning on Boxing Day morning for a show, so we don’t have loads of time together sadly! One tradition we always keep is opening our stockings at the end of my parents’ bed in the morning—even though I’m 24!”
What advice would you give to young performers hoping to make it in theatre?“My biggest piece of advice would be to never stop believing in yourself! You have to be your biggest supporter and keep yourself motivated, even when it seems impossible.”
From her infectious enthusiasm for pantomime to her cherished family traditions, Ruby Hewitt is truly lighting up the festive season. Whether she’s captivating audiences in Buxton or opening stockings at home, her passion and dedication shine bright.
