Bringing one of cinema’s most iconic love stories to the stage is no small feat, but Ghost the Musical manages to capture the heart and suspense of the beloved 1990 film with a mix of soaring ballads, comedic charm, and emotional depth. Now playing at The Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham until April 5, 2025, this production is a must-see for fans of the original film and newcomers alike.

Rebekah Lowings delivers a breathtaking performance as Molly Jensen, portraying grief, love, and longing with remarkable sincerity. Her vocals soar, filling the theatre with emotion, making every moment feel raw and deeply moving. Meanwhile, Jacqui Dubois as Oda Mae Brown is the show’s comedic heartbeat, injecting much-needed levity into the darker moments with her infectious energy and razor-sharp timing.

Josh St. Clair takes on the challenging role of Sam Wheat, the murdered lover stuck between worlds. While his chemistry with his co-stars is undeniable, his performance occasionally lacks the projection needed to fully command the stage. Nevertheless, his presence in the more tender moments—particularly in scenes with Lowings—ensures that the romance at the heart of Ghost remains compelling. James Mateo-Salt as Carl Bruner rounds out the lead cast with a solid performance, adding the necessary tension and betrayal that drives the story forward.

Of course, a major highlight is the musical score, featuring the timeless Unchained Melody alongside original compositions by Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart. The music beautifully enhances the story, complementing the emotional weight of each scene.

Overall, Ghost the Musical is a hauntingly beautiful production that successfully blends romance, humor, and the supernatural. With powerhouse performances, a gripping story, and a stunning score, it’s a theatrical experience that lingers long after the final bow.
