The Karate Kid: The Musical review

Going into The Karate Kid: The Musical, I knew very little about the story, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. What I got was an incredibly entertaining evening that was packed with humour, heart and plenty of energy.

The story follows Daniel LaRusso as he navigates a new life, learns karate under the guidance of the wise Mr. Miyagi and discovers that true strength comes from balance, respect and resilience.

Gino Ochello gives a likeable performance as Daniel, while Adrian Pang is wonderful  as Mr. Miyagi, bringing warmth and wisdom to the role. Their relationship is the emotional core of the production and is portrayed with genuine sincerity. Joe Simmons also shines as Johnny Lawrence, with many of the interactions between the two leads creating some of the show's funniest moments. Abigail Amin is charming as Ali Mills, while Matt Mills commands the stage as the formidable John Kreese. Sharon Sexton and Finley Oliver complete the principal cast with strong supporting performances, and the ensemble deserve huge praise for their energy and commitment throughout.

The comedy was one of the biggest surprises for me. There were plenty of laugh-out-loud moments throughout the evening, with the cast bouncing off one another brilliantly. The humour never felt forced and added to the feel-good atmosphere of the production.

The karate sequences are fast-paced and energetic, creating an exciting sense of momentum. While some of the fight scenes move at lightning speed, I actually think this adds to the overall theatrical experience, making the action feel dynamic and engaging. Combined with the inventive staging and strong musical numbers, it creates a production that never loses its pace.

The Tony Award-winning design team successfully reimagines the beloved story for the stage, honouring the original while giving it a fresh theatrical identity. Visually, the production is vibrant and inventive.

Overall The Karate Kid: The Musical is a genuinely wholesome, feel-good show. It has something for everyone—comedy, action, music, heartfelt moments and an uplifting message about friendship, perseverance and believing in yourself. It is the sort of production that leaves you smiling as you leave the theatre.

I'd especially recommend it for families and younger audiences, especially anyone with an interest in karate or martial arts, but adults will find plenty to enjoy too. Whether you're already a fan of The Karate Kid or, like me, you're experiencing the story for the first time, this musical offers a thoroughly entertaining night out.
