The Trinity Players have done it again. With their latest production of Guys and Dolls, the award-winning amateur theatre society brings 1950s Broadway charm and Depression-era drama to vibrant life at Sutton Coldfield Town Hall.
Set amidst the hustle and bustle of Times Square, Guys and Dolls follows the intertwining stories of Sky Masterson, a suave gambler who unexpectedly falls for straight-laced mission worker Sarah Brown, and Nathan Detroit, the ever-scheming organiser of a floating crap game who is trying to keep his long-suffering fiancée, nightclub singer Miss Adelaide, from walking out after a 14-year engagement. The result is a musical brimming with heart, humour, and a toe-tapping score.
Leading the cast with impressive chemistry were Dan and Sasha Barnes as Sky and Sarah. Their performances were both nuanced and charismatic, anchoring the show’s emotional core with ease. Meanwhile, Matt Hunt and Bexs Perry as Nathan Detroit and Miss Adelaide were absolutely fabulous, delivering razor-sharp comic timing and undeniable stage presence. Perry, in particular, brought infectious energy and vulnerability to Adelaide, making her a real standout.
What truly elevated this production was the ensemble. Every performer, even in background moments, remained fully in character, creating a rich and believable world on stage. That level of detail and discipline is a testament to the company’s dedication and experience.
If there was one minor area for improvement, it would be the scene transitions, which could benefit from a little tightening to help maintain the show’s momentum. But this is a small point in what is otherwise an exceptional production.
Celebrating over 50 years of high-quality musical theatre, Trinity Players continue to prove why they are one of the Midlands’ most beloved amateur societies. With past productions ranging from West Side Story to Beauty and the Beast, their Guys and Dolls might just be their best yet.
Guys and Dolls runs at Sutton Coldfield Town Hall until Saturday 7th June.🎟 Tickets available at: ticketsource.co.uk/trinity-players
