Bilston Operatic Company present Chitty Chitty Bang Bang – Review

Updated: Nov 9, 2023

Have you seen a flying car in the sky lately? Well, if I'm asking that question it can only mean one thing. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang has flown into Wolverhampton Grand Theatre.

Bilston Operatic Company present Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Established in 1927, this amateur theatre company offers members the opportunity to become involved in all aspects of theatrical production. They strive to produce theatre of a professional standard, pride themselves on being a friendly company and welcoming to all new members.

Based on the beloved 1968 film version of Ian Fleming’s children’s book and featuring an unforgettable score by the Sherman Brothers (Mary Poppins), CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG is one family-friendly blockbuster that audiences will find “Truly Scrumptious”.

The story follows an eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts who sets about restoring an old rice car from the scrap heap with the help of his two children. Soon they discover the car's magical properties including the ability to float and fly. But trouble occurs when the evil Baron Bomburst desires the magic car for himself. The family joins forces with Truly Scrumptious and batty Grandpa Potts.

And of course, it wouldn't be Chitty Chitty Bang Bang without the very well-known songs including "Toot Sweets", "Me Ol' Bamboo", "Truly Scrumptious", and of course the titular track Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" to name a few. For me, Hushabye Mountain had an enchanting, dreamy feel to it. The choreography for the number Me Ol' Bamboo was rhythmical and innovative.

You wouldn’t have known this was an amateur production. The leading cast members were marvellous singers, dancers, and actors. The whole company put on a terrific show.

This is a show for all generations, bringing nostalgia to those older and excitement to the young. This classic musical, performed by Bilston Operatic Company, truly has something for everyone.

Bilston Operatic Companies' rendition of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is on at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre until Saturday 11th November 2023. Tickets are available at the following link https://www.grandtheatre.co.uk/whats-on/chitty-chitty-bang-bang-bilston/
