Bring It On: The Musical - Review

The Alexandra Theatre is back showcasing its homegrown talent from across the West Midlands with its production of Bring It On.
Bring It On The Musical is a musical with music by Tom Kitt and Lin-Manuel Miranda, lyrics by Amanda Green and Miranda, and a book by Jeff Whitty. It’s loosely based on the 2000 film of the same name written by Jessica Bendinger, focusing on the competitive world of cheerleading and over-the-top team rivalries. The musical tells the story of Campbell Davis, a young cheerleader who dreams of leading her squad to victory at a national competition. It would seem she has it all. However, in an unexpected turn of events, she is mysteriously reassigned to another school: inner-city Jackson High, where she knows hardly anyone and worse: they don’t have a cheerleading squad!
What ensues is a real journey for Campbell as she befriends the dance crew, and they go on to prepare for the ultimate competition – the National Championships. But can they achieve the impossible? The incredibly cutthroat world of competitive cheerleading meets the fierce rivalries of high school politics, friendship and romance in this bitingly relevant show that takes audiences on a high-flying journey packed with electrifying songs.
This was an incredible gala evening to celebrate the amazing work the Alexandra Theatre do in putting on this production. All the staff both those front of house and behind the scenes work incredibly hard to give young people this fantastic opportunity of experiencing what it’s like to rehearse and perform on such a big stage.

The stage experience run by the Alexandra Theatre is incredibly popular and this was showcased by the sheer volume of applicants they had this year. Eighty were selected to be included in this musical. These young stars in the making have devoted their time, energy and focus to give a quality, fully staged performance in a professional theatre.

The young people that partake in this production are incredibly talented. You can see all the hard work they have put in over the summer to bring this production together. This opportunity enables them to excel either on the stage or to develop their technical theatre skills. Some of these performers will be ones to watch in years to come, perhaps in the West End. For others, this is just an exciting opportunity to take part in over the summer. Whatever their reasons, it's wonderful that this programme runs year after year.

Director and choreographer Pollyann Tanner has yet again done a terrific job of leading this cast of young people alongside a big team including producers Hannah Whitfield and Victoria Ellery-Jones and musical director Chris Newton.

The whole cast was brilliant and their talents shone through. There were many triple threats who will no doubt go on to achieve great things in the world of musical theatre. A special mention must go to Molly Ann Bache as La Cienega and Demi Mitchell as Nautical. For me their chemistry was infectious, so natural and fun to watch.

Bring It On the Musical continues at Alexandra Theatre Birmingham, until Saturday 19th August. Tickets are available at the following link https://www.atgtickets.com/shows/stage-experience-bring-it-on/the-alexandra-theatre-birmingham/
