Cluedo 2 - Review

Following the overwhelming success of its predecessor, Cluedo returns to the stage with a brand-new production, "Cluedo 2 – The Next Chapter." Set in the swinging 1960s, this sequel promises a fresh dose of murder, mystery, and comedy, all wrapped up in an engaging and entertaining package. And it’s on at The Alexandra Theatre Birmingham. I was excited because I loved the first production.

The plot centres around Rick Black, a rock 'n' roll legend whose career has hit the skids. Desperate to reclaim his fame and fortune, Rick moves into the luxurious Graveny Manor, only to find himself surrounded by a motley crew of suspects and an escalating body count. The story brings together a colourful ensemble: Rick’s supermodel wife Emerald Peacock, his manager Colonel Eugene Mustard, his loyal roadie Professor Alex Plum, the enigmatic interior designer Annabel Scarlett, and the mysterious housekeeper Mrs. White. Adding to the intrigue is Rick's missing former songwriting partner, “The Reverend” Hal Green, whose disappearance coincides with Rick's career decline.

Jason Durr, known for his roles in "Heartbeat" and "Casualty," delivers a standout performance as Colonel Mustard. His portrayal brings a perfect blend of charm and comedic timing, making him a delightful centrepiece in this whodunit. The rest of the cast, each embodying their characters with flair and eccentricity, contribute to a lively and engaging dynamic on stage. Dawn Buckland as Mrs White the cook was brilliant, her comedic timing and delivery was excellent.

The direction by Mark Bell, renowned for his work on "The Play That Goes Wrong" and the original UK production of Cluedo, is sharp and pacy. Bell ensures that the energy never dips, maintaining a brisk pace that keeps the audience on their toes. The script, penned by BAFTA Award winners Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, is filled with witty dialogue and clever twists, ensuring that laughter and suspense go hand in hand.

The set design captures the opulence and mystery of Graveny Manor perfectly, complete with secret passageways and intricate rooms that the characters dart in and out of. The 1960s setting adds a nostalgic charm, enhanced by period-appropriate costumes and a fittingly groovy soundtrack.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of "Cluedo 2 – The Next Chapter" is its interactive element. The audience can’t help but play detective, piecing together clues and trying to solve the mystery alongside the characters. This engagement adds an extra layer of fun and makes the viewing experience more immersive.

As the bodies pile up and secrets unravel, the play maintains a delicate balance of comedy and suspense. It's a rollicking spoof that never takes itself too seriously, providing an entertaining escape from reality. The final twist is a masterstroke, leaving the audience in delighted surprise.

"Cluedo 2 – The Next Chapter" is a must-see for fans of the original play, the beloved board game, or anyone looking for a night of light-hearted fun and mystery. Its stellar cast, sharp direction, and engaging story make it the perfect antidote to a cold, rainy night. Grab your tickets and prepare for a hilarious whodunit that will keep you guessing until the final moment.

Cluedo is on at The Alexandra Theatre Birmingham until Saturday 27th July 2024. Tickets are available at ATG Tickets. Don’t miss out on this delightful theatrical treat!
