Fame, live forever

After what feels like such a long time, the Alexandra Theatre’s Stage Experience is back. This year, they took on the iconic full-scale production of the smash hit musical Fame. Based on the 1980’s pop culture film the story follows the class of New York City’s celebrated high school for the performing arts through the trials, tribulations, triumphs and fails as they navigate the world of dance, drama, and music. This musical was conceived and developed by David de Silva with the book by Jose Fernandez, lyrics by Jacques Levy, music by Steve Margoshes, with the title song Fame written by Dean Pitchford and Michael Gore.

Stage experience enters its 17th year at the Alexandra Theatre Birmingham and is a concept that has allowed talent from the West Midlands to excel both on and off stage with many performers going on to have glittering careers in the arts. The team at the Alexandra Theatre work tirelessly to put this whole production together, from the crew backstage to the administrators who help with the audition process and of course Pollyann Tanner who since the concept back in 2003 has worked with the Alexandra Theatre to direct and choreograph the shows.
Stage experience has changed many lives and it has allowed young people to delve further into the world of the arts in a more professional setting and to make friends for life along the way. Some of these young people have never been on stage before and have not had the opportunity to go to the theatre, so this is a real whirlwind for them and allows them to dream possibilities beyond their imaginations. The Alexandra Theatre has done a wonderful job in continuing to help the youth of the West Midlands achieve their ambitions.

The entire cast was incredible and the fact that they put this production on after only a few weeks of rehearsals is a real credit to them and the team behind the scenes. The talent that the young people have is incredible and it was wonderful to see some potential stars of the future. The main cast handled the sensitive nature of some of the topics with such care and wisdom beyond their years. Their vocal ranges were outstanding singing a score of unforgettable songs including Out Here On My Own, These Are My Children, Let’s Play A Love Scene and of course the famous theme song Fame.
It was wonderful to see so many people in the audience supporting this amateur production, although it didn't feel very amateur at all, it felt very slick and professional. The family and friends of these young people should be extremely proud of what they have produced. I would implore you to go and see Fame at the Alexandra Theatre because you never know, you might see one of those young people in the next West End show.

Fame runs at the Alexandra Theatre from Thursday 25th August until Saturday 27th August. You can get your tickets at the following link https://www.atgtickets.com/shows/fame-stage-experience/the-alexandra-theatre-birmingham/
