SÃO PAULO DANCE COMPANY

I will always love theatre musicals and big showcase performances, but dancing has a special place in my heart.

I'm so excited about the SÃO PAULO DANCE COMPANY in the UK and Ireland this spring.

A fusion between the elegance and poise of classical ballet paired with the sensuality and sophistication of Latin American dance, this is a sleek, sexy, and extremely technical company of dancers who present a rich programme of work from three incredible choreographers rooted in Latin American or Spanish culture.

Goyo Montero, a resident choreographer with Carlos Acosta’s company Acosta Danza, explores the idea of collective identities in Anthem, an epic and emotionally charged ensemble piece for 14 dancers, beautifully staged with dramatic lighting.

Gnawa, by Spanish choreographer Nacho Duato draws on the Mediterranean colours and flavours of Valencia, powered by the hypnotic, ritualistic music of North Africa.

Brazilian choreographer Cassi Abranches’ (who recently contributed to Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Black Sabbath ballet) colourful and flirtatious Agora provides an exhilarating finale. Exploring time and rhythm, she sculpts the movement of each dancer’s body with the percussive beats and bass grooves of Afro-Brazilian fusion.

It's so wonderful to see the celebration of life and culture on stage. This is why I love dance, particularly ballet, so much, because it transcends beyond, and brings people from all walks of life together, regardless of their native tongue, ethnicity, sexuality, or economic status.

The company’s performances are passionate and energetic, they combine international classical technique, fluidity, and Brazilian swing. The pieces were physically demanding, using the extremities of the body. However, the dancers coped well with this technically challenging choreography and exhibited a lot of control over their bodies.

SAO PAULO DANCE COMPANY is performing at The Grand Theatre Wolverhampton until Saturday 16th March 2024. Tickets are available at the following link https://www.grandtheatre.co.uk/whats-on/sao-paulo-dance-company/

They then continue the tour at Eden Court, Inverness on the 19th and 20th of March and then at Norwich Theatre Royal on the 22nd and 23rd of March.
