The Bodyguard is back and it's on at the Alexandra Theatre Birmingham as their month-long production.
The adaptation of the 1992 movie starring the late Whitney Houston had its first performance in 2012. The book by Alexander Dinelaris remains true to the original script. This production is directed by the fabulous Thea Sharrock.
The story follows former Secret Service agent turned bodyguard, Frank Farmer, who is hired as a bodyguard to protect superstar Rachel Marron from an unknown stalker. Each expects to be in charge – but what they don’t expect is to fall in love. It's a very typical Hollywood romance, fuelled by anger and attraction.
This production stars multi-platinum Australian recording artist Emily Williams (Australian Idol, Young Divas) as Rachel Marron and Ayden Callaghan (Emmerdale, Hollyoaks) as Frank Farmer. Emily-Mae stars as Rachels's sister Nicki Marron in a role that I believe allows a performer to showcase their vocal talents with the song ‘Saving All My Love for You’.
The opening of the show is sublime, an electrifying performance. There's drama, lights, glitzy costumes, and powerhouse vocals for the song ‘Queen of the Night’. For me, this show has one of the best openings I've seen and sets the tone for the rest of the show.
