The Full Monty – Review

Sometimes you have to bare everything. This can only mean The Full Monty is on stage at the Alexandra Theatre Birmingham.

Based on the 1997 smash hit film, this brand-new production is a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs, laughs and heartbreak. Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the film on a major national tour.

The play is set in Sheffield in the 90s and follows a group of unemployed steelworkers who decide to create a male strip show to make ends meet. They are each struggling and have their motivations for needing cash. This show is particularly relevant now as we are hit again by a cost-of-living crisis.

Featuring a little something for everyone! Starring Danny Hatchard (Eastenders, Ridley Road, Our Girl, SCROOGE) as Gaz, Jake Quickenden (Footloose, Hair, X Factor, Dancing on Ice) as Guy and Bill Ward(Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie) as Gerald, with Neil Hurst (Fat Friends the Musical, All Creatures Great and Small, Coronation Street) as Dave, Ben Onwukwe (The Shawshank Redemption, Professor T, Marcella) as Horse and Nicholas Prasad (Around the World in 80 days, The Comedy of Errors, Doctors) as Lomper. All the cast are fabulous and their Sheffield accents are so true to the region.

The entire audience was laughing throughout. They were cheering, whooping and applauding the whole way through. The cast are cheeky and play to the audience which adds to the theatrics.

A mention must be extended to the set and costume designer Jasmine Swan who has constructed a large, rotating, movable set that acts as a number of venues. This cleverly crafted piece means that little time is given to set changes and they happen seamlessly and with ease.

This is a fun night out with the girls. I haven’t laughed that much at a play in ages. It’s funny, relevant and contemporary. It's an enjoyable play that manages to shine a light on subjects including unemployment, sexual equality, suicide, homosexuality, and body image. But it also combines humour, heart, and comedy.

So, if you want to know whether the guys leave their hats on or not, you will have to come and watch!

The Full Monty continues at The Alexandra Theatre Birmingham until Saturday 3rd February 2024. Tickets are available at the following link https://www.atgtickets.com/shows/the-full-monty-the-play-by-simon-beaufoy/the-alexandra-theatre-birmingham/
