The sound of music presented by stage experience - Review

Stage Experience presents The Sound of Music at The Alexandra Theatre – Review

The Alexandra’s Stage Experience returns triumphantly for its 19th production, and this year, they’ve selected one of the most treasured musicals of all time: The Sound of Music

Set in Austria in 1938, The Sound of Music tells the tale of Maria, an enthusiastic but wayward nun who is sent away from her abbey to serve as a governess for the seven children of the stern Captain von Trapp. What follows is a journey of discovery, love, and music that has resonated with audiences for generations. The story, suggested by Maria Augusta Trapp's memoir, is brilliantly complemented by the unforgettable score from Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. Featuring beloved songs such as "Climb Ev’ry Mountain," "My Favourite Things," and the iconic title number, the production is a celebration of musical theatre. This production is a heartwarming tribute to the timeless story of the von Trapp family, brought to life by an extraordinarily talented young cast.

I would say this is a more mature production and one of my personal favourites. I have to say I thought the cast was incredible. They bought the musical to life. Molly Hopkins shone as Maria bringing a warmth and kindness to the character. Cree Henson took on the infamous role of Captain Von Trapp performing with a wisdom beyond his years. Ella Blair as Mother Abbess had an incredible vocal range. Molly Ann Bache was perfectly cast as Elsa Schraeder she was able to be both charming and superior. The whole cast both leads and supporting were incredible and they should be very proud.

The Alexandra’s Stage Experience is more than just a performance; opportunity it’s a remarkable initiative that has, since its inception in 2003, given over 2,000 young people a chance to experience the magic of the theatre, both on stage and behind the scenes. This year’s production is no exception, offering these budding stars a platform to showcase their talents in a professional setting.

What makes this show truly special is the enthusiasm and energy of the young cast. Their performances are nothing short of spectacular, infusing new life into the beloved characters and bringing a fresh perspective to this classic musical. The chemistry between the cast members, especially the interaction between Maria and the von Trapp children, is heartwarming and genuine, capturing the essence of the story with grace and charm.

The direction and choreography are sharp and effective, ensuring that the pace of the show never falters, while the set design beautifully evokes the grandeur of the Austrian landscape and the intimate spaces of the von Trapp household. The live musicians, under expert direction, bring the iconic score to life, making every musical number a highlight of the evening.

The Alexandra Theatre, located in Birmingham, continues to be a beacon for young talent in the region, and the Stage Experience program is a testament to the theatre’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of performers and theatre professionals. Watching these productions is always a joy, as they not only entertain but also remind us of the importance of supporting and encouraging young artists.

The Sound of Music at The Alexandra is a must-see for anyone who loves musical theatre. This is a perfect opportunity to witness the stars of tomorrow in a production that is as uplifting as it is timeless.

Don’t miss out on this enchanting experience that celebrates the enduring power of music and love.
