Surinderella reimagines the Cinderella fairytale with a full Bollywood makeover — sparkling costumes, high-energy dance numbers, and plenty of humour.
At its heart is Surinder, weighed down by chores and her selfie-obsessed stepsisters, with the glamorous Devi Godmother sweeping in to transform her destiny. Prince Kavi adds the romantic spark, while the ensemble brings colour and rhythm to the stage.
There are some strong performances throughout, with Kuldeep Goswami standing out as a true highlight. Having previously seen him in Bhangra Nation, I was once again struck by his exceptional talent — an electrifying dancer who drew focus every time he was on stage.
The idea and concept behind the show are clever, and there are moments of real fun. However, I felt that it lacked authenticity at a consistent level. For me, it could have leaned further into its South Asian roots, embracing the cultural elements more fully to give the production greater depth.
Overall, Surinderella is vibrant and playful, with flashes of brilliance, but it left me wishing it had trusted its Bollywood identity just a little more.
