The Wizard of Oz - Review

Direct from The London Palladium, the sensational new production of one of the world’s most beloved musicals, The Wizard of Oz, has landed in Wolverhampton.

Directed by Nikolai Foster, this rendition ofThe Wizard of Oz takes creative liberties that breathe new life into the classic tale. Departing from the Great Depression era Kansas, we are transported to a kitsch, futuristic-cum-1950s Oz. This imaginative setting is best exemplified by Glinda, portrayed by Emily Bull, who glides onto the stage in a sparkly poodle skirt on a hot pink Vespa, mobile phone in hand. Bull’s performance is both whimsical and commanding, adding a contemporary twist to the Good Witch we all know and love.

As Dorothy, Toto, and their friend’s journey down the yellow brick road, audiences are treated to a spectacular adventure filled with heart, courage, and a hefty dose of magic. The ensemble cast delivers strong performances, ensuring that the beloved characters are as endearing and memorable as ever.

A highlight of this production is undoubtedly RuPaul’s Drag Race UK winner and Dancing On Ice star, The Vivienne, who brings a new level of glamour and mischief to the role of the Wicked Witch of the West. Their performance is a dazzling blend of menace and camp, captivating the audience from the very first entrance. And we all love to hate an over-the-top villain. Benjamin Yates as the scarecrow stood out for his voice and comedic delivery.

The musical’s score remains as timeless as ever, featuring iconic songs from Oscar-winning MGM film such as "Over The Rainbow," "Follow The Yellow Brick Road," and "We’re Off To See The Wizard." Additional songs by the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice blend seamlessly with the original score, enriching the overall musical experience.

The production boasts a talented creative team, with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. Harburg. The adaptation, masterfully handled by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jeremy Sams, brings L. Frank Baum’s classic book to life in a way that feels both fresh and faithful to the source material. Shay Barclay’s choreography is dynamic and visually striking, while Colin Richmond’s set design transports the audience into the magical realms of Oz with vibrant colours and inventive staging.
