Theatre review- & Juliet

Make way for Juliet!

Bursting with vibrant energy and infectious humor, & Juliet is taking the UK by storm after its spectacular award-winning debut in London’s West End. With three Olivier Awards and six WhatsOnStage Awards under its belt, this production has been hailed as “glorious” and a “must-see.” Now, it's making its way to the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre, continuing to dazzle audiences with its unique charm.

Created by the writer behind the much-loved Schitt's Creek, & Juliet brings new life to Shakespeare's classic tale, propelled by a setlist of iconic pop hits. The soundtrack features chart-toppers like Britney Spears' “…Baby One More Time,” Katy Perry’s “Roar,” Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” and Backstreet Boys' “Everybody,” all masterfully crafted by the legendary Max Martin. This jukebox musical infuses the familiar story of Juliet with an exhilarating, modern twist. It’s pop hit after pop hit.

In this reimagined version, Juliet rewrites her own narrative, turning away from her tragic ending and embarking on a journey of self-discovery, female empowerment, and second chances. It’s a fresh take on one of the world’s most famous love stories, and the result is a joyful, laugh-out-loud spectacle that celebrates independence and love in all its forms.

Leading the cast is award-winning singer and actor Matt Cardle, alongside Strictly Come Dancing star Ranj Singh, who is making his musical theatre debut. Together, they light up the stage with charisma and undeniable talent, supported by a dynamic ensemble that brings out the best of the show’s wit and energy. Gerardine Sacdalan as Juliet was incredible, her performance was outstanding. Also a huge well done to Liam Morris who stepped in as Romeo for the second act, he delivered a flawless performance.

Having had the pleasure of seeing the original London cast, I was eager to experience & Juliet again, and I can confidently say it’s lost none of its magic. The show still delivers that infectious feel-good factor, and its message of girl power is still at the core.

& Juliet runs at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre until Saturday 12th October 2024. Don’t miss your chance to catch this vibrant and heartwarming musical – tickets are available here.
