Peter Pan Goes Wrong – Review

I do love a Goes Wrong show from Mischief Magic.

And luckily enough, Peter Pan Goes Wrong is on currently at the Alexandra Theatre Birmingham.

I've seen Peter Pan Goes Wrong before but nothing was going to stop me from seeing it again because it is just laugh after laugh. And what I loved about it was the cast gave it just as much energy and commitment as they did when I saw it before. For me this is the sign of a dedicated and professional cast.

Of course, sets are breaking, technical hitches are occurring, and cast arguments are happening.

In typical fashion the concept is simple yet effective, leaving much room for fantastical error: the much-loved members of The Cornley Drama Society put on a play (J.M. Barrie’s beloved children’s story and turn it into a side-splitting comedy), and once again battle against technical hitches, flying mishaps and cast disputes on their way to Neverland with hilarious and disastrous results. As is customary the chaos starts before the show even begins and this time there was a potential electrocution on the cards as actors on stage tried haphazardly to switch some lights on.

Easily 500 things or more go wrong in this production, from floorboards flying open, smacking actors in the face to a wobbly casement window, that proves difficult and faulty wiring that is already sparking before the lights go down. It would be impossible to name everything that occurs in this production, and I don't wish to spoil all the fun.

To be in a show where so many things go wrong purposefully, but to make it look effortless and funny requires a particular set of skills. This cast is incredible because I do think that comedy is very hard to get right.

With that in mind I feel I must mention as many as I can by name including Jake Burgum (Trevor), Jack Michael Stacey (Chris), Matthew Howell (Robert), Jean-Luke Worrell (Francis), Ciara Morris (Sandra), Theo Toksvig-Stewart (Max), Clark Devlin (Dennis), Jamie Birkett (Annie), Gareth Tempest (Jonathan) and Rosemarie Akwafo (Lucy). With understudies: Romeo Mika, Clare Noy, Consuela Rolle and Phil Yarrow. Many of the cast double up to multi role too!

Peter Pan Goes Wrong continues at the Alexandra Theatre Birmingham until Saturday 23rd March 2024. Tickets are available at the following link https://www.atgtickets.com/shows/peter-pan-goes-wrong/the-alexandra-theatre-birmingham/
