The Osmonds: a new musical - Review

The Osmonds is currently on at The Alexandra Theatre Birmingham and is a must-see for all fans of the chart-topping group.

This musical is directed by Shaun Kerrison and choreographed by Olivier Award-winning Bill Deamer. It tells the story through the lens of Jay Osmond. The musical tells the true story of five brothers from Utah who were thrown into the spotlight as children, going on to create smash hits, decade after decade. From their star residency on The Andy Williams Show from 1962 to 1969, to pop stars and ‘Osmondmania’ from 1971 to 1975, to the arrival of The Donny & Marie Show, from 1976 to 1979, they lived an extraordinary life recording chart-topping albums, selling out arenas and making record-breaking TV shows - until one poor decision cost them everything they had worked for.

I have to say that for me, this felt like a show of two halves because I found the dancing to be second to none with incredibly clean, slick choreography that was executed very well. The lead adult cast had very strong dancing abilities with them performing a variety of different styles, including tap dancing, which is always nice to see in a musical. The choreographic formations were neat and well-rehearsed. However, for me, it felt at times that the vocal performance was lacking slightly in terms of vocal projection. I would also like to mention that the younger cast was very charming, talented, and entertaining, they’re stars in the making. A special mention to Alex Cardell, who played the role of Andy Williams with effortless charisma. I'd also like to mention Nicola Bryan, who took on the role of Olive Osmond, her performance was very charming, her mothering like a warm hug on a cold night.

This is definitely one for fans of The Osmonds, as the audience was full of praise. Puppy Love had them swaying in their seats, with some even waving memorabilia. At times it felt like I was at a pop concert with the volume of cheering and screaming coming from the audience.

The show features a chart-topping list of anthems including Love Me For A Reason, Crazy Horses, Puppy Love, Long Haired Lover From Liverpool, Paper Roses and many more, THE OSMONDS: A new musical will take you back to the relive 60s…the 70s…and the 80s…. all over again!

I would also Like to say a huge thank you to the whole team at the Alexandra Theatre for another wonderful press night. The whole team always work so hard and always do so with a smile on their faces.
